Flat feet (also called pes planus) are very common, and physiotherapy at Cumberland Physiotherapy Parramatta can make a big difference—especially if you’re dealing with pain in your feet, knees, or lower back.
Why flat feet can cause problems
With flat feet, your arches collapse inward (overpronation), which can:
- Strain the plantar fascia (leading to plantar fasciitis)
- Affect alignment up the chain (ankles → knees → hips → back)
- Cause fatigue, pain, or instability when walking or running
Key physio exercises
These target strength and control of your foot arch and supporting muscles. Exercises that our Parramatta physio Matthew West may prescribe involve:
- Arch activation by building intrinsic foot muscles
- Strengthening calves and arch support
- Improving foot muscle control
- Targeting tibialis posterior muscle, which is a key arch stabiliser
- Balance work to improve foot and ankle stability
Footwear & support
- Choose supportive shoes (firm heel counter, arch support)
- Avoid very flat, unsupportive shoes for long periods
- Consider orthotics (custom or prefabricated)
Pain relief tips
- Ice after activity if sore
- Stretch calves (tight calves worsen flat feet mechanics)
- Reduce high-impact activity temporarily if pain is high
When to see our Parramatta Physiotherapist Matthew West
You should get assessed if:
- Pain persists >2–3 weeks
- You have sharp heel pain (possible plantar fasciitis)
- You get knee/hip pain linked to walking/running
- One foot is much flatter than the other
Our Parramatta physio Matthew West can assess gait, prescribe tailored exercises just for you, and fit orthotics if needed.
